Rooftop Weathervanes are complete with a rooftop mount. For a pleasing proportion, a weathervane should be 2-3" long for each foot of height of a one-story building. Deviations from this rule of thumb consider the setting. E.g., a home on a hilltop may call for a taller weathervane to stand out in silhouette. A cupola will help to create a taller effect for your the weathervane.

Centuries ago, weathervanes were one of the first weather instruments to detect wind direction. In Athens, the Tower of Winds topped with the god Triton, is one of the earliest weathervane examples dating back to ca. 48 B.C. In it is simplest design, the weathervane is a flat area that wind blows against to indicate wind direction. The weathervane must be carefully balanced, that is, the front part must have the correct back counterbalance. Today, weathervanes are a piece of dynamic architectural decor with a purpose.

Whitehall is regarded as the worlds largest weathervane manufacturer with it is 48-ft tall schooner weathervane on White Lake, Michigan. Over the decades, they perfected the color finish to withstand the harshest elements.
