Sundials & Armillaries
One of the oldest measuring instruments sundials have ancient history. The simplest sundial is a vertical stick in a sunny area. Time is determined by the angle and length of the shadow. Sometimes sundials were built as part of a building or standing pillar. The designs are endless: from a simple flat disk and gnomen (The stick that casts the shadow.) to a decorative three-dimensional armillary.
Sundials are dynamic pieces of artwork with a function. We offer small garden sundials to large 8-ft sundials in several designs including armillary sundials (Latin armilla meaning circle, bracelet, iron ring). Armillaries are spherical sundials representing the equator, poles of the earth, etc. In ancient times, they were astronomical instruments used to teach about the earth and heavens.
