Consider wind and splash in your size design to contain the water. A rule of thumb is that the inner diameter must be at least double the height of the jet of water. Wind blows the water around, to one side or the other and out of the pool. Splash occurs when a drop of water lands back in the pool. When designing these pools great consideration should be given to the depth of the pool. Certainly it is less expensive to build a shallow pool ("reflecting pool") than a deep pool. Pools as shallow as 6" would be acceptable. However, it may be necessary to have a sump in the center or a remote pump and even a depth valve to automatically fill the pool when water gets too low. Reflecting pools and other applications are designed purposely to be very shallow, that is with almost no water laying in the bottom. Pools for water fountains are made with general depths of water ranging from 8" to 18".
